Variant of the line test for children (or adults who have difficulty concentrating on a chart.) The center symbol is surrounded on four sides by symbols of the same size. The interaction between the center symbol and the surrounding symbols is approximately the same as in a line test. The test size is convenient and easy to administer during screenings, home visits, and unique testing situations. Often, this is the first line test that can measure visual acuity of a young child with amblyopia, producing the affect of crowding. Line sizes from 20/63 to 20/16 (6/19 to 6/4.8) equivalent.
